When Henry Caught Imaginitus
by Nick Bland
So, the first step in getting past the boredom is to do something creative. How can you use your imagination? What can you make, invent, pretend? Here are some ideas to get you started.
ACTIVITIES:
- Make an "I'M BORED" jar -- Get your grownup's permission to go through the recyclables for a container (jar, plastic container, tin can), and wash it thoroughly. Cut up a discarded magazine or newspaper and glue the pictures to the outside of your container. Next, write a list of things you would like to do on scraps of paper and put them in your jar. Then, anytime you feel bored, choose a slip of paper and start doing something.
Check out muminthemadhouse for more ideas to add to your "I'M BORED" jar.
STEM:
- Erupting Car Wash With your grownup's permission, set up a science experiment using vinegar, baking soda, soapy water, and your small toys (cars, action figures, or animal figurines). The link above will give you all the details, but feel free to improvise -- that means, adapt the car wash to fit the supplies you have on hand.
- Fantasy Structures Let your inner engineer out and create your own fantasy structure using whatever you have on hand -- toothpicks, newspaper, spaghetti, disposable cups, straws, twigs, yarn, boxes, etc. Maybe your creation will be model-size and made with toothpicks, like on the Flashbug website (above). Or, with your grownup's approval, perhaps you want to make something bigger like an under-the-table fort using sheets or blankets. Be inventive using whatever you have available and see where your imagination takes you.
Don't forget to get some pictures of the ways YOU are dealing with boredom.
Remember, make it a great day, keep safe, and keep on reading!
