Listen to the Shouldn’ts, the Impossibles, the Won’ts.
Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.
– Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends

ACTIVITY:
BLACKOUT POETRY Try writing some poetry of your own in this creative way. All you need is a page from a discarded book and a black marker. First, get your grownup's permission to use a page from a castoff book, or a page from a newspaper column or magazine. Then, go line by line of the text, choosing the words for your poem. Draw a box around those words. You may only want one word from the whole line, or the whole sentence...it is your choice, your poem. After you have the boxed the words you want, color over the rest of the text on the page by blacking them out or drawing patterns. Just be sure NOT to cover up your chosen words and/or sentences. Voila! You have created a "found word" poem.
